Is a premium domain worth it?

By the NameUpgrade team · Updated October 2026

Whether a premium domain is "worth it" depends on what it does for your business. Price is only half of the question. The other half is the cost of not owning it.

What a premium domain gives you

  • Trust at first glance: customers, partners and investors tend to assume the .com is the real company.
  • Fewer leaks: no lost email, no type-in traffic going to someone else.
  • A shorter, clearer brand: easier to say, remember and share, which matters most when your URL is part of your product.
  • Protection: whoever holds your exact .com controls what appears there.

What companies that upgraded say

Elon Musk described buying Tesla.com as taking "over a decade" and an "amazing amount of effort", and still felt it was worth pursuing. Jason Fried spent 18 months negotiating for hey.com. Cal.com's founders pointed out that their shorter domain cut typing for every booking link. Read the full stories in our case studies.

When it's probably not worth it (yet)

  • You haven't found product–market fit and may still change your name.
  • The owner is an active business that depends on the name.
  • A strong alternative is available that you'd be just as happy with.

How to decide

Ask three questions: how much traffic and email might be leaking today, how visible you'll be in the next year, and whether the name is realistically obtainable. We're happy to give you an honest view. Get in touch.

Questions

Do premium domains help SEO?

Not directly as a ranking shortcut, but they tend to earn more clicks, more direct visits and more natural links, which help over time.

When is the best time to buy a premium domain?

Often before or around a funding round, before your company's profile makes the name more expensive.
