Finding the owner is the first real hurdle in buying a taken domain. Since GDPR came into force in 2018, most registrars redact personal details from public WHOIS. Here is what still works.
Start with a WHOIS / RDAP lookup
A lookup on ICANN's lookup tool or the registrar's site shows the registrar, creation and expiry dates, nameservers, and sometimes an organisation name or country. Even when the name is hidden, this tells you how long the domain has been held and where to send a relay message.
Use the registrar's contact relay
Many registrars forward messages to the owner through an anonymised email address or a web form. Messages often go unread, so keep them short and clear, and don't rely on this channel alone.
Look at historical WHOIS
Domains registered before privacy rules often have older records showing a name, company or email. Historical WHOIS databases can reveal who held the domain in the past, which is often still the owner today.
Read the domain's own clues
- The website, if there is one: contact page, imprint, privacy policy, footer.
- Nameservers: they can point to a marketplace, a hosting company or a known domain investor's setup.
- Archived versions of the site on the Wayback Machine.
- Email records (MX): show whether email on the domain is still active, and therefore which address may be read.
Know when to bring in a specialist
If the trail goes cold, a domain acquisition specialist combines these sources with historical data, industry contacts and patient follow-up. At NameUpgrade this research is the first step of every search.
Questions
Is WHOIS information public?
Partly. The registrar, dates and nameservers are public. The owner's name and email are usually redacted for individuals, especially in Europe, but are sometimes shown for companies.
Does a privacy-protected domain mean it isn't for sale?
No. Privacy protection is turned on by default at many registrars. It says nothing about whether the owner would sell.
